Comparing the budget airlines when travelling with children (2024)

Admittedly you are likely going to go with the airline that offers the best price and/or flight times, however, it is still worth knowing how the airlines compare in terms of flying with children - particularly if you actually have a choice.

Jet 2

  • Infants under 2 on the date of the flight  travel for £20 per flight.
  • Infants are seated on the lap of their accompanying adult and secured using an extension seatbelt. If you want you can instead book a seat for them where they’ll have to sit in a car seat, as long as it meets the required criteria. The adult and infant will sit at the window as this is where the two oxygen masks are based.
  • You automatically get an additional 10kg in hold luggage allowance for free when travelling with an infant.
  • You can take up to two items of child/infant equipment per child on the hold provided that these items don't exceed 10kg. Per the Jet2 website these items can be a collapsible pushchair/car seat/travel cot however we have also taken a backpack carrier and bed guard in the past and double checked with Jet2 chat before we flew. Pushchairs can be taken to the gate and then checked into the hold from there (you get the label at the check in desk before going through security).
  • You can ask the cabin crew to heat up milk on board.

    Ryanair

    • You don't get an additional hold allowance but you are allowed to take an additional baby bag up to 5kg on board.
    • You can take up to two items of child/infant equipment per child on the hold. These items are also as per Jet2 above.
    • Baby changing on board are located at the rear of the aircraft. Cabin crew can also warm baby bottles if needed.

    • If you’re travelling with children under 5, they will board you early (although personally the less time on board the better for my two).
