Spending a week in Northumberland

Published on 24 September 2022 at 13:43

Given all the building work we were having on the house we didn't feel like we could leave the country and as such we opted for a trip to Northumberland in mid September just before I went back to work. We decided to base ourselves in Amble as it had it's own amenities and is close enough to a lot of sites. I've added the highlights of our trip including where we stayed and where we ate.

Bamburgh - whilst we didn't actually go into the castle we played around on the beach just in front and enjoyed the magnificent views. It's a beautiful beach and O loved crawling around and playing with the sand. We tried O out in the backpack carrier for the first time that we had rented from our local sling library and he absolutely loved it!

Alnwick - We went to the Castle which for any Harry Potter fans is a must given a lot of the films were filmed here. We joined a "Alnwick on location" tour which showed you where various films had been set. We carried O around in the carrier for this and we had a great time. After this we had a potter around town and then went to Barter Books which is one of the largest second hand bookshops in Europe and is set inside an old train station. There was a working toy train going around the ceiling which O loved and we bought him a couple of books to take home. It is definitely worth a visit.

The Fish Shack - as seen on the Hairy Bikers - this place was fab! We sat outside and they had a highchair for O and we tucked into some absolutely delicious food!

Queens Plaice - this was a fish and chip shop in the centre of Amble and it did amazing gluten free fish and chips for A!

Where we stayed

We stayed in a lovely house in Amble that had a travel cot, high chair and stair gate included. When we stayed it was run by Coquet Cottages but you can still find it here. https://www.holidaycottages.co.uk/cottage/90712-once-upon-a-tide

It had parking available and was walkable to the amenities in Amble.
