Top Tips for a Perfect Day at Chester Zoo

Visiting Chester Zoo is a fun and enriching experience, but with over 125 acres to explore and thousands of animals to see, planning your day can make all the difference. Here are some top tips to help you make the most of your visit.

1. Arrive Early

  • Why: The zoo is vast, and arriving early allows you to maximize your time and beat the crowds, especially on weekends and during school holidays.
  • Tip: The zoo opens at 10:00 AM, so aim to be there just before opening time. This also gives you a better chance to see the animals when they’re most active.

2. Plan Your Route

  • Why: With so much to see, it’s easy to miss something if you wander aimlessly.
  • Tip: Grab a map at the entrance or download the Chester Zoo app, which offers interactive maps and updates on feeding times and talks. Plan to visit your must-see animals first, especially if you’re interested in popular species like the tigers, elephants, or jaguars. Personally I found the interactive map hard to navigate so definitely use both maps (the physical map for navigation and the app for up to date information).

3. Wear Comfortable Clothing and Footwear

  • Why: You’ll be walking a lot—Chester Zoo is big!
  • Tip: Comfortable shoes are a must. Dress in layers so you can adjust to the weather, and bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella, as the weather can be unpredictable.

4. Stay Hydrated and Bring Snacks

  • Why: Walking around all day can be tiring, and you’ll want to stay refreshed.
  • Tip: There are water refill stations around the zoo, so bring a reusable bottle. While the zoo has plenty of cafes and food outlets, packing a few snacks can save you time and money.

5. Make Time for Keeper Talks and Feeding Times

  • Why: These scheduled events offer unique insights and allow you to see the animals up close.
  • Tip: Check the schedule upon arrival or on the app and plan your visit around these times. The talks are informative and often include fun facts and behind-the-scenes stories about the animals.

6. Don’t Miss the Boat Ride in the Islands Zone

  • Why: This is a unique way to see animals in the Southeast Asian-themed section of the zoo.
  • Tip: The boat ride can get busy, especially in the afternoon, so consider heading there early. It’s a relaxing way to see the animals from a different perspective.

7. Take Advantage of the Picnic Areas

  • Why: Taking a break in the zoo’s beautiful picnic areas gives you a chance to rest and recharge.
  • Tip: If you’re bringing your own food, the picnic spots are a great place to stop. They are well-maintained and offer scenic views, making them perfect for a leisurely lunch. They have indoor and outdoor areas which is super handy.

8. Explore the Play Areas if You’re with Kids

  • Why: The zoo has fantastic play areas where kids can have fun.
  • Tip: The play areas are a great way to break up the day for younger children. They can climb, swing, and play, giving parents a moment to relax.

9. Stop by the Gift Shop Before You Leave

  • Why: The gift shop offers a range of unique souvenirs and gifts, many of which support conservation efforts.
  • Tip: If you’re looking for something special to remember your visit, the gift shop has a wide range of items, from plush animals to eco-friendly products. It’s also a good spot to pick up a last-minute gift or memento.

10. Be Mindful of the Time

  • Why: The zoo is large, and it’s easy to lose track of time while exploring.
  • Tip: Keep an eye on the clock, especially if there are specific exhibits or talks you don’t want to miss. The zoo typically closes between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, depending on the season, so plan your day accordingly.

11. Capture the Memories, But Be Present

  • Why: It’s tempting to take photos of everything, but sometimes it’s best to just enjoy the moment.
  • Tip: While it’s great to capture your favorite moments, remember to take some time to just watch and enjoy the animals without a lens between you and them.

12. Finally - look out for discount codes

  • Why: The cost of visiting Chester Zoo can vary depending on the time of year and the type of ticket you purchase. Generally adult tickets are around £25 - £30 and children's tickets from £20 - 25  so it can be an expensive day out.5
  • Tip: Keep checking ahead of time for offers and discount codes. We had the Kids Pass which got us a little over 10% off the purchase price of our tickets which was a nice saving.
