If you have a train obsessed toddler like me then the National Railway Museum in York is an absolute must! It's also really good as a rainy day activity.

It's free admission - however, the museum does rely on donations to keep going so we donated on the day we visited - but obviously you don't have to.

I have to say that it was an excellent day for all the family, I was taken aback at how awesome the trains were! Some of them are absolutely ginormous! You start off in the main hall and there are loads of trains - particular favourites of ours were The Mallard, a Japanese Bullet Train (which you can go inside) and then just some of the really old trains that are super impressive.

We wandered around for ages and O loved looking at all the trains and running around. You can actually walk under a train through a walkway which was really cool. The best bit for O was walking up (and down) the station steps they have and at the top you have a view of all the trains.

The North Shed is another part of the museum that holds lots small "railway items" including model trains, station signs and is also home to the Flying Scotsman - unfortunately on our first visit it was out on "tour" which was disappointing - however it is now back and we got to see it the second time around! So if you want to see it then maybe double check ahead of time that it is there.

The model railway was also a big hit with young and old alike and we spent a while watching the train go back and forth. We had a quick bite to eat at the cafe and then had to leave as O was still napping at this point. We spotted a little play area for young children on the way out which looked great so we will certainly make use of it next time!

There is also the Wonderlab which is brand new and a paid for ticketed area. It looked fab and my friends have said their children loved it - so this is certainly something we will be doing on our next visit.
